Photography Vocabulary

                Vocabulary Research:

  1. CCD Sensor: CCD stands for Charge coupled Device, which a chip is containing a grid-like field of extremely small, light-sensitive cells, each of which emits an electrical signal in proportion to the intensity of the light striking it.
  2. CMOS sensor: A sensor that functions like a CCD while using less power and creating less heat, making it the choice for many high resolution digital cameras. Like a CCD, it is the light-sensitive device in many digital cameras and scanners that captures the image – i.e. converts light into data that can be recorded as a picture. CMOS stands for Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor.
  3. Resolution – Fine detail in an image. Resolution also means “Resolving power”.
  4. Megapixel- refers to a million pixels, and is used in describing the number of pixels that a digital device’s image sensor has.
  5. PPI: Pixels per inch
  6. DPI: Dots per inch
  7. Visual acuity: acuteness or clearness of vision.
  8. DSLR: Digital single-lens reflex: uses a mechanical mirror system and pentaprism to direct light from the lens to an optical viewfinder on the back of the camera.
  9. RAW: Contains minimally processed data from the image sensor or either a digital camera, image scanner, or motion picture film scanner.
  10. DNG: Digital Negative
  11. TIFF: Tagged Image File Format: File format for storing images
  12. APERATURE/F-Stop: Aperature is a hole or an opening through which light travels.
  13. Shutter Speed: A common term used to discuss exposure time
  14. Shutter Speed Rule: you use an x mm lens, and then your shutter speed should not be less than 1/x s, to avoid blurring due to camera shake when you don’t use a tripod. E.g. if you use 300mm, then shutter speed should be more than 1/300s.
  15. Depth of Field: The portion of a scene that appears acceptably sharp in the image.
  16. Focal length: A measure of how strongly the system converges or diverges light.
  17. Focal Length rule: determine the slowest shutter speed possible for hand holding without noticeable blur due to camera shake, you can do this by: taking the reciprocal of the 35 mm equivalent focal length of the lens.
  18. Wide Angle lens: One that projects a substantially larger image circle than would be typical for a standard design lens of the same focal length.
  19. Digital ISO: Measures the sensitivity of the image sensor.
  20. White Balance: The process of removing unrealistic color casts
  21. Interpolation: imaging method to increase or decrease the number of pixels in a digital image.
