In my research of on demand media, I found that most of what we own in our own homes is on demand. The blackberry you own or that you gave your kids, maybe you don’t own a blackberry, but you own an android is an example of on demand media. The DVD player every household more than likely has is another usage of on demand media. Most people go to www.youtube.com but that is a form of on demand media. My family and I are Netflix subscribers. This is also another usage of on demand media.
When you listen to the radio online you are utilizing the on demand media. When you say “I want to research this.” And you turn on your computer and do research on whatever subject is of interest that is also on demand media. Mp3 players are on demand media as well. I believe there is more than this in the on demand media, but these are the most popular forms and usage of it. (Jennings, 2005)
I decided to speak with my dad about my assignment, and he told me that “as a consumer, I can tell you that I do not watch cable television. I just go online to watch what I want.” This is a quoted from my dad. Most of the time consumers and practices will use on demand media to advertise, such as doing a commercial or a preview that will show up before the movie at the theaters. The add on the internet page when we are browsing. Consumers, such as me prefer the choice of choosing what we would like to watch, when we want to watch it.
One of the major benefits to on demand media is that you get to choose what you want to hear or watch at any second. Last night I chose to watch a movie called Trust on www.netflix.com instant queue using my PlayStation 3. This is an example of how I chose to utilize on demand media. I am not sure as to any downfalls, but I know the major benefit is the power to choose what, when, where, and how you want to listen to or watch something.
As far as what can be done to improve on demand media, this is really a personal opinion. I believe that they can allow us to stream in 3-D. I do, however, believe that we are not far off from this. We already have some movies that show up in the IMAX theaters, such as Jonas Brothers Concert Experience, this originally showed up in 3-D at a movie theater. I have the DVD but there is no way to view it in 3d.
I go online using Netflix, and same thing. This would be an improvement and a step in the correct direction of On Demand Media as I feel that 3D is the next step of Media to begin with. This technology is programmed in C++, Java, etc. it appears at first glance that you would need a large team for the 3D media, but at a second glance they did not use a huge team, they had software developers and a couple others.
Nintendo has been experimenting with 3D technology since the late 1980’s. This is as far back as I have been able to go, but it could be further than this. “Famicom Grand Prix II: 3D Hot Rally was the first game developed by Nintendo to take advantage of the technology, and utilized special goggles with a liquid crystal shutter in order to make images appear to pop out of the screen, giving them a 3D effect. In 1995, Gunpei Yokoi, the creator of the Game Boy, began developing the Virtual Boy. The system was released much earlier than intended, so that Nintendo could allocate more resources to the then-Ultra 64, and the Virtual Boy went on to become a commercial failure for Nintendo.
