I have chosen three movie trailers to evaluate.  This is 40, Star Trek into Darkness, and last but not least Oblivion is the three movies I have chosen to evaluate. Let’s start with ‘This is 40.” (trailers, 2012) This movie is in the genre of Comedy. The audio captures the viewer’s experience because it shows the funny portions when the characters are conversing, the music is a little upbeat but you can hear a change in the music depending on the emotions in that particular scene. I saw no special visual effects, but as for the scenes I saw they show the actors acting out their characters and showing funny portions especially the last scene. As far as I can tell, the only cinematic device possibly used would be something similar to Sound booth, Adobe Audition, or some other sound editing program, maybe even premiere pro.

The second movie I evaluated was Star Trek Into Darkness (network, 2012). This is in the Action/Adventure/Science fiction genre. You hear Narrative talking from the start, someone speaking to Captain Kirk (captain of the enterprise). The music gets your heart beating and it leaves you in suspense. It builds up the suspense that you’re left with at the end of the trailer.

The start of the visual starts with seeing the city leaving the question to new star trek viewers “what city is this?” Possibly, even, answering a major question for old star trek viewers “Is this the federation?” There are explosions that caused even me to grip my computer chair and open my eyes with the “awe” feeling.  The words spoken through this trailer fits the scenes, the feelings you’re given, the thoughts you think of. Towards the end where you see something coming through the water, first thought in my mind as a viewer is ‘what is that thing?”

Those water effects could be caused by a program such as After Effects or a similar program. They have a lot of fade ins, fade outs, out of focus at the beginning and bringing it into focus in the beginning focusing on the captain’s chair of the enterprise. This is what is attracting the attention of the viewer as well as the explosions. Most action viewers love explosions so to see this big one that is involved in this particular trailer.

Oblivion is a very interesting movie trailer in which I enjoyed watching it multiple times and breaking down my evaluation of it. (vztrailers, 2012). The genre of the movie appears to be Action & Adventure. I would even go as far to say it is possibly a science fiction movie when he mentions “nothing here is human” or something along those lines, which reminds me and potentially other viewers of Aliens. At least when I heard that, the first thought I had was “Aliens.” The audio captures the viewers with starting off by who appears to be the main character, jack, telling the story about where they were, what had happened. I got sold when I heard “60 years ago the president was attacked, we won the war, but they destroyed half the planet.” It makes me wonder “who attacked the president, who destroyed the planet?” If I, as a viewer questions that, then other viewers will probably question it and even watch it, just to find the whole story.

At some point during the trailer, you see “jack” in what appears to be an underground tunnel or cave of some sort, maybe even an old abandoned building. While he is looking around you hear growling. That makes the viewer’s wonder “what is there? What is that?” Gets the heart racing, keeps us in suspense. We never really see what that was and can only be left with our imaginations.  When you hear music it is suspenseful causing the heart beating that I spoke of earlier when discussing the star trek trailer. I also noticed a very faint heartbeat sound that caused me to feel my own heart beating at that very moment, more than likely caused by the heart beat in the music that can be faintly heard. If I felt it, more than likely other viewers will feel the same thing.

The visual was miraculous, started off showing you what he was talking about when explaining that’s where the last super bowl was played. There were a ton of overhead views, a few explosions, fire, and lights all over. The lighting was great actually! It was dark when it needed to be, but it was very bright when it needed to be. The font is amazing midway through the trailer it says “EARTH IS A MEMORY WORTH FIGHTING FOR.” The way they should the font, what they chose for the font color and size fits the genre of movie, the explanation that jack is giving. I believe the narration is done by Jack because he was the primary focus of the movie trailer showing that he is potentially even the main character. The actor they chose for him, Tom Cruise, is a very renowned actor. It would make sense to have him as a main character and show a lot of him in the trailer. The movie title at the end of the movie was done with a fade out which brought the trailer to an end. The trailer is very miraculous, very interesting…leaving fans and viewers craving for more.

I believe the cinematic devices used for this trailer could potentially be Adobe Premiere Pro, Sony Vegas Pro, Sound booth, Windows Movie maker, and not to mention green screen technology.
